Demi Lovato Comes Out as Non-Binary
Demi Lovato is living their truth after revealing that they are non-binary.
On Wednesday, 19 May, the 28-year-old pop singer made the announcement via Twitter, saying that they will be changing their pronouns from she/her to they/them.
“Non-binary” is the term used by some people who do not identify exclusively as a man or a woman – two genders which form part of the the traditional gender binary.
Lovato then tweeted: “This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson [sic].”
The “Sorry Not Sorry” hitmaker added: “Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & [sic] know I am sending so much love your way.”
Fans and LGBT-rights organisations have come out in support for Lovato, with the official Twitter account for the British LGBT Awards writing: “Demi, today you inspire courage in all of us to live freely and authentically. Thank you.”
